Rama Duwaji: The Artist Behind New York City’s New First Lady

As New York City celebrates the election of Zohran Mamdani as its new mayor, attention has naturally turned to the figure beside him—his wife, Brooklyn-based artist Rama Duwaji. While Mamdani’s win marks a new political chapter for the city, Duwaji’s emergence into the public eye tells a quieter, more personal story about creativity, identity, and grace under scrutiny.

At 34, Mamdani has become a face of political transformation, known for his progressive views and unorthodox rise to power. Yet as he steps into the mayor’s office, his partner’s story unfolds in parallel—an artist whose work and perspective reflect the diversity and cultural complexity of the city they now help lead.

Duwaji, a freelance illustrator and animator, built her career through perseverance and a distinct creative voice. Years before her husband’s political ascent, she was already establishing herself in the art world, producing work that explored themes of belonging, sisterhood, and cultural memory.

Her personal journey took a pivotal turn in 2021 when she met Mamdani on the dating app Hinge. Their connection deepened quickly, and by early 2025, the couple quietly wed at the City Clerk’s office—an intimate ceremony that mirrored their preference for a grounded, private life.

Shortly afterward, Mamdani shared his feelings publicly: “Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race — which should be about you — about her. Rama isn’t just my wife, she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”

As her husband’s political influence grew, Duwaji chose to remain largely away from the spotlight, declining interviews and focusing on her work. Among friends and peers, she is admired for her composure and humility. Photographer Hasnain Bhatti described her as “our modern-day Princess Diana,” an observation that speaks to her quiet presence and understated charisma.

Yet behind that privacy lies a story of resilience and artistry that continues to captivate New Yorkers eager to know more about the city’s new First Lady.
