The room seemed to hold its breath. Leonard’s usual confidence faltered, his eyes searching for support that was no longer there. The carefully maintained façade of charm and control was cracking, leaving him exposed.

Judge Dawson leaned forward, her expression firm but kind. “Thank you, Isla, for sharing that with us. It’s important for the court to understand how you feel.”

Isla nodded, a small, victorious smile appearing as she drew strength from the acknowledgment of her truth.

Leonard’s lawyer attempted to intervene. “Your Honor, this is merely a dog’s reaction. It hardly constitutes evidence.”

“Mr. Reed,” Judge Dawson cut him off sharply, “the court was not aware of these training specifics before. Under the circumstances, it is relevant.”

The lawyer opened his mouth again, but a single glance from the judge silenced him. The courtroom witnessed a man stripped of his defenses, vulnerable before a child and her faithful canine companion.
