Authorities have confirmed that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspect accused of killing Charlie Kirk, has been placed under “special watch” at the Utah County Jail while awaiting a mental health evaluation.
Officials stated that Robinson is being housed in the facility’s special housing unit, where medical and mental health staff will monitor him closely. The evaluation process is expected to take several days as authorities determine his long-term placement within the jail system.
According to the sheriff’s department, Robinson will continue through the standard classification process once cleared, with ongoing oversight from medical, mental health, and custody teams.
The department explained that a “special watch” designation is applied for various reasons, including the nature of the alleged crime, behavioral concerns, violent tendencies, or any indication of suicidal intent. However, officials said they have not received reports suggesting Robinson has expressed suicidal thoughts or made such statements.
Robinson was taken into custody following a 33-hour manhunt after allegedly shooting and killing Charlie Kirk, 31, during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Kirk, a prominent public figure, was addressing attendees at a Turning Point USA gathering when the incident occurred. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
Robinson was apprehended shortly after his father identified him from surveillance footage shared by investigators.
