Exercise-induced vasculitis, often called “golfer’s rash,” “Disney rash,” or “hiker’s rash,” is a surprising condition that can affect even the healthiest and most active individuals. It occurs when tiny blood vessels in the lower legs—typically around the ankles, calves, and shins, and occasionally the thighs—become inflamed after extended physical activity in hot weather.

The first sign is usually a sudden, deep red or purple rash that appears unexpectedly, alarming many who experience it. This reaction happens because, in high temperatures, the body works to cool itself by pushing blood to capillaries near the skin’s surface. However, prolonged exertion causes blood to pool in the extremities, slowing circulation and leading to visible inflammation.

While the rash may look concerning, it is generally harmless. It is seen most often in women over 50 but can affect anyone. Many people first notice it after a day spent sightseeing, hiking, or walking long distances in warm climates.

Symptoms can include itching, burning, or tingling, and the rash itself may look severe enough to resemble more dangerous conditions. Fortunately, it usually clears up within 10 days, especially once the individual rests in a cooler environment.

There are simple ways to ease discomfort while the rash heals. Cool compresses or damp towels can soothe irritation and reduce swelling, while elevating the legs helps improve circulation. Staying hydrated also supports recovery. Over-the-counter antihistamines may help with itching, but ice should never be applied directly to the skin.

However, certain actions can make the condition worse. Hot baths, direct sun exposure, and continued strenuous activity will prolong symptoms. Even massage can intensify the reaction. Topical gels, muscle rubs, and antibiotics offer no benefit and may cause further irritation.
