For a long moment, Dr. Mercer simply stared at the monitor, his reflection ghosted across the dark screen. His mind, disciplined by years of medical training, scrambled for a plausible theory — a trick of light, perhaps, or tampering with the footage. But deep down, he knew what he had seen. The machines had reacted to something real, something no test or diagnostic could explain.
He replayed the footage again, and again, searching for any sign of identification — a reflection, a handprint, even a fragment of clothing that might anchor the mystery to something human. There was nothing. The figure’s presence had been deliberate and controlled, leaving no trace beyond a cold unease that now clung to the office.
The hospital was already under scrutiny, and Mercer understood the potential consequences of involving the police. Yet, the alternative — to conceal what he had found — would mean living with a secret that defied both science and reason. With trembling fingers, he lifted the phone from its cradle.
“Detective, this is Dr. Jonathan Mercer from St. Catherine’s Medical Center,” he said, his tone measured but taut. “I believe we have a situation that requires immediate police investigation. I have… evidence of a mysterious intruder in our hospital.”

When he ended the call, Mercer sat in silence, the rhythmic beeping of a distant heart monitor echoing faintly through the hallway. Outside, dawn began to break over the hospital’s windows, its light weak and uncertain.
