Malia and Sasha Obama Embrace Life Beyond the White House as They Build Their Own Paths
Growing Up in the Public Eye
Malia Obama and Sasha Obama spent some of their most formative years living under extraordinary public scrutiny. As the daughters of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, they experienced a childhood unlike that of most young Americans.
From 2009 through 2017, the sisters lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW while their father served as president of the United States. During those years, the two girls transitioned from childhood into young adulthood while the eyes of the world followed their every milestone.
Malia, who was born on Independence Day in 1998, and Sasha, born on June 10, 2001, faced challenges that extended far beyond academics and extracurricular activities. Their lives unfolded against the backdrop of one of the most recognizable residences in the world.
Michelle Obama has spoken openly about the unique circumstances her daughters navigated while growing up in the White House.
“They are watched. They had to learn how to balance the unwanted attention, but do it politely. To build their own lives in the spotlight and not be eaten up by it,” the former first lady said on the Moments that Make Us podcast with Melinda French Gates.
Michelle also emphasized the importance of preparing both daughters for independent adulthood despite the privileges associated with their upbringing.
She continues, “Well those girls had to be smart and confident and independent straight away, even when they were living in a house with butlers and maids and florists. But I was raising them thinking, ‘You’re not going to live here, and with me, forever. So I’ve got to hand you your life soon and let you manage it.’”
Malia Obama’s Journey Into Adulthood
As the eldest daughter, Malia Obama’s transition into adulthood became increasingly visible as she reached important milestones during her father’s presidency.
One memorable moment came in 2014 as she prepared for prom. Like many parents, Barack Obama found himself reflecting on how quickly his daughter had grown up.
“I think it’s fair to say that the first time you see your daughter in heels is a little bit jarring,” he said on Live with Kelly & Michael. “She’s lovely. She’s beautiful.”
Following her graduation from high school in 2016, Malia chose to take a gap year before beginning college. The decision allowed her time to explore personal interests and gain practical experience.
Her passion for storytelling and entertainment became increasingly evident during this period. Malia worked in the entertainment industry and accepted opportunities that provided insight into television production.
Among those experiences were roles as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s CBS science-fiction drama series Extant. She also expanded her creative involvement by contributing as a writer on the Amazon series Swarm.
Malia later enrolled at Harvard University, where she pursued her education before graduating in 2021.
Her creative ambitions continued to develop after college. In 2024, working under the professional name Malia Ann, she introduced Heart at the Sundance Film Festival. The short film marked her debut as both writer and director.
The accomplishment reflected years of growing interest in the entertainment industry and demonstrated her commitment to forging an identity separate from the political world in which she was raised.
Sasha Obama’s Educational Path
While Malia pursued her own interests, Sasha Obama charted a path defined by her energy and determination.
Even before she reached adulthood, Barack Obama offered a glimpse into Sasha’s personality.
Barack tells People in 2008 that Sasha “is just full of energy and the comedian in the family.”
After completing high school in 2019, Sasha began her college experience at the University of Michigan.
However, like countless students around the world, her educational journey was affected by the Covid pandemic. She spent her first year learning online during an unprecedented period of disruption.
Despite those challenges, Sasha continued pursuing her academic goals and eventually attended the University of Southern California.
In May 2023, she graduated with an undergraduate degree in sociology.
Her achievement represented another significant milestone for the Obama family, whose daughters had long been encouraged to pursue independence and personal growth.
Sisterhood Beyond the White House
Although Malia and Sasha have followed distinct educational and professional paths, their close relationship has remained a central part of their lives.
The sisters now share a home in Los Angeles, creating a new chapter defined less by political expectations and more by ordinary experiences of adulthood.
Michelle Obama has spoken warmly about the bond between her daughters and the comfort they provide each other.
“It feels good to know that the two girls you raised find solace at a kitchen table with one another. It’s like the one thing you want for them,” Michelle Obama said.
The statement reflects a sentiment familiar to many parents: the hope that siblings remain connected long after childhood ends.
For Malia and Sasha, maintaining that connection has been especially meaningful given the unusual circumstances surrounding their upbringing.
A Night Out in Los Angeles
As young women establishing lives of their own, Malia and Sasha have also embraced opportunities to socialize and enjoy time with friends.
The sisters were photographed during a night out at The Bird Streets Club, a Hollywood hotspot located in Los Angeles.
Canadian rapper Drake was also present during the gathering.
The event drew public attention, in part because of continued interest in the lives of the former first daughters.
Sasha wore a black cropped corset paired with slouchy, low-slung cargo pants and open-toe shoes.
She styled her braids in a high ponytail and accessorized her outfit with earrings, a necklace, and rings.
Malia embraced a similarly relaxed aesthetic, choosing a sheer lace-up top paired with high-waisted printed trousers.
She completed her look with chunky lug-sole boots while wearing her long brown hair over her shoulders.
Reports indicated that the group remained at the venue until approximately 4 a.m. before departing together in a vehicle with friends.
The evening highlighted a reality that has become increasingly apparent over the years: Malia and Sasha are no longer the young girls many remember from White House photographs and official events.
Instead, they are adults navigating friendships, careers, family relationships, and the everyday experiences that accompany this stage of life.
The Obama Family and Drake Connection
Drake’s appearance alongside Malia and Sasha also attracted interest because of his longstanding connection to the Obama family.
At the time, the Toronto-born artist was in Los Angeles performing at the Crypto.com Arena, formerly known as Staples Center, as part of his “It’s All A Blur Big As The What?” tour.
Years earlier, Drake had publicly expressed interest in portraying Barack Obama in a film adaptation of the former president’s life story.
“I hope somebody makes a movie about Obama’s life soon because I could play him,” the “God’s Plan” singer said in 2010.
The idea resurfaced in 2020 when Barack Obama was asked about Drake’s desire to take on the role.
“I will say this, Drake seems to be able to do anything he wants,” Barack said when asked about the rapper wanting to play him in a film. “I mean, that is a talented, talented brother. So, if the time comes and he’s ready…”
He adds, “Drake has, more importantly I think, my household’s stamp of approval. I suspect (my daughters) Malia and Sasha would be just fine with it.”
Creating Lives of Their Own
The lives of Malia and Sasha Obama have evolved significantly since their years in Washington.
Both women have pursued higher education, explored individual interests, and established themselves outside the framework of their parents’ political careers.
Malia has devoted energy toward creative projects within the entertainment industry, while Sasha has completed her studies and embraced life in Los Angeles.
Throughout these transitions, their family has emphasized resilience, confidence, and independence.
Michelle Obama’s reflections reveal the intentional approach she and Barack took while raising their daughters in extraordinary circumstances.
Their goal was not simply to guide two children through the White House years but to prepare them for adulthood beyond those historic walls.
Today, Malia and Sasha continue building futures shaped by their own ambitions and experiences.
Whether pursuing creative endeavors, celebrating educational achievements, or spending time together as sisters, they remain connected by family bonds forged during one of the most visible childhoods in modern American history.
As they continue moving forward, public fascination with their lives may persist. Yet the story that increasingly emerges is one of two women striving to define themselves on their own terms while maintaining the close relationship that has supported them throughout every chapter of their journey.
