She and her husband at the time, actor Michael Ansara, welcomed their son Matthew Ansara on August 29, 1965.
Ansara was known for his work in the television series Broken Arrow.

However, when Matthew was nine years old, his parents ended their 15-year marriage.

“Matthew never told Mike and me that he was using heroin—he didn’t want to hurt us. But we figured it out because he had been acting sluggish, losing weight, staying out all night. I insisted that he enter a rehab center, and I let him come back home when he came out a month later.”
A Difficult Decision for a Parent
Despite entering treatment, Matthew’s struggles continued.
Eden described how the situation forced her to make an incredibly difficult decision.
“But he started using again. The professionals told us that if your child is using drugs, he has become the drug: He is no longer your child, and he no longer has a home with you. So, I locked him out when he was 20, which was the hardest thing I ever had to do.”
Over the following years, Matthew moved in and out of rehabilitation programs.
Both of his parents remained involved in efforts to help him recover.
During visits, he sometimes acknowledged the challenges he faced.
“When he visited us, sometimes he’d laugh and say, ‘Here I am, better lock up everything.’ But when he was sober, he’d tell us, ‘I’m so sorry. I love you more than anyone in the world,’” Eden said.
Moments of Recovery and Hope
There were periods when Matthew appeared to regain stability.
At age 27, he experienced a stretch of recovery that brought renewed hope.
During that time, he married and enrolled at UCLA to study creative writing.
However, the progress proved difficult to sustain.
Eden later recalled confronting him during another difficult moment.
“He got angry, threw things and stomped out.”
After months of searching, she eventually discovered that he had been living on the streets.
A Near-Fatal Overdose
Shortly after his separation from his wife, Matthew called his mother in distress.
“One day, soon after they separated, he called me, sounding half dead, and said, ‘Mom, I’m sick.’ Mike’s wife and another friend drove with me to a bad part of Venice, Calif., and we found him in his apartment, unconscious from an overdose.”
Eden described the conditions in which he had been living.
“He weighed 200 lbs., but we three women got him up and to the car and took him to the hospital, which saved his life.”
Although he survived that incident, his challenges continued.
At age 29, he was diagnosed with clinical depression and began taking medication.
A Final Attempt at Rebuilding His Life
When Matthew reached the age of 31, he again appeared to be rebuilding his life.
He pursued acting roles similar to those of his parents.
He starred in the 2001 film To Protect and Serve and also appeared in Con Games, which was released later that year.
During this time, he also planned to marry a woman he described as a “wonderful girl.”
Eden remembered a hopeful conversation with her son.
“One day he told me, ‘Life is great, Mom. I can’t believe I spent so many years not being awake to how green the trees are.’”
The Tragic Loss of Her Only Child
Shortly after that conversation, tragedy struck.
On June 26, Eden was awakened at 3 a.m. by a phone call about her son.
Earlier that night, police had discovered Matthew, then 35, slumped over the steering wheel of his truck.
Authorities also found vials of anabolic steroids that he had been using while training as an amateur bodybuilder.
An autopsy later determined that his death resulted from an accidental drug overdose.
Eden described the devastating loss.
“Then he was dead. He had shot up with a dose of unusually pure heroin, and it was too much for his heart,” Eden said. “Even when he was getting in shape, he did it like an addict—obsessively. He was unable to do anything in moderation.”
Living With Grief and Reflection
The loss of her only child remains one of the most painful chapters of Eden’s life.
She has spoken openly about the questions that still linger.
“Matthew took it horribly. He wanted his mommy and daddy to stay together. If I had to do it over, I would have waited until he was older. But then I remind myself that so many kids from divorced homes don’t become addicts.”
Reflecting on her son’s struggles, she added, “He won a lot of battles. But he lost his personal war.”
Michael Ansara later died in 2013 at the age of 91 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.
He is buried next to his son at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
Continuing to Work and Inspire

She married Jon Eicholtz in 1991 and has continued appearing in television and film projects.
