Florida Boys Face Charges After Vandalizing School Library
Two Florida boys are facing criminal charges after allegedly causing more than $50,000 in damage to their school library, with the case gaining national attention after their mothers reported them to authorities.
The incident occurred at Friendship Elementary School in Deltona, Florida. On September 13, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said the boys, aged 12 and 13, first entered the school during the day and later returned at night. Investigators reported that during their second visit, the pre-teens went on a destructive spree, throwing books across the library, toppling furniture, and writing graffiti on doors. Their actions reportedly triggered the school’s fire alarm, prompting deputies to respond and find the media center in complete disarray.
“Overnight, deputies responded to a fire alarm at Friendship Elementary School in Deltona. Once on scene, they found a glass door had been shattered and the media center had been vandalized,” authorities posted on social media, including body camera footage from the scene.
Extent of the Damage
Images released by law enforcement showed books scattered across floors, smashed furniture, and other property destruction. Surveillance footage captured the suspects entering the library, with one boy wearing a Monster Energy cap and both attempting to conceal their identities.
Mothers Step In
After police shared the images online, tips poured in, but the most crucial leads came from the boys’ own mothers, who recognized their children and contacted authorities.
“Their moms turned them in,” the Volusia Sheriff’s Office stated in a September 15 Facebook post, which included the boys’ mugshots. “The boys confessed to the incident, which caused at least $50,000 in damage to the media center. They broke into the school during the daytime hours, then returned later in the evening to look at the damage and cause more.”
Charges Filed
Both boys now face multiple criminal charges, including two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief, and theft. Authorities have not confirmed how the case will proceed through the juvenile justice system, but the severity of the vandalism could lead to significant legal consequences.
