A local police officer in Augusta, Georgia, recently responded to an urgent call from a young child that led to the discovery of a medical emergency involving her mother. The incident occurred on a peaceful Tuesday morning, when Officer James Holloway, a 23-year veteran of the Augusta Police Department, was on routine patrol.
According to Holloway, a small girl ran toward his patrol car, visibly distressed and clutching a teddy bear. “Mr. Police Officer, please, please, you have to help me,” the child pleaded. Holloway immediately exited his vehicle and spoke to the girl to assess the situation.
The child, identified as seven-year-old Lucy Bennett, explained that her mother, Rachel Bennett, had fallen and was unable to get up. “It’s my mama. She… she can’t get up anymore. She tried to make me breakfast this morning, but she fell down and couldn’t get back up. She’s breathing funny, and she won’t wake up properly,” Lucy said. She then led Holloway to her home, approximately three blocks away.
As they walked, Lucy provided additional context about her mother’s condition. “My mama is really good. She works really hard and she takes care of me all by herself. But lately, she’s been getting weaker and weaker. This morning, when she fell, she looked so scared. I’ve never seen her look scared before,” she explained.
Upon arrival at the residence, Holloway observed that the mother required immediate medical attention. He had previously radioed dispatch for backup and an ambulance. “Dispatch, this is unit 247. I’m responding to a possible medical emergency on Maple Street. We’ll need backup and possibly an ambulance. Over,” Holloway reported.
The house, described as a modest, light-blue home with white shutters and a flower garden, was noted by Lucy for the personal touches added by her mother. “Even when things are hard, we should always try to make something beautiful,” Lucy said, reflecting the care and effort her mother put into her home despite ongoing health challenges.
Authorities emphasize the importance of community awareness and quick response in situations involving children and vulnerable adults. The Bennett case highlights how observant children can play a critical role in seeking help during emergencies and demonstrates the importance of police responsiveness in medical crises.
Emergency responders confirmed that the mother received timely medical care and was stabilized. The incident serves as a reminder that swift action, even when prompted by a young child, can prevent serious outcomes and save lives.
