President Donald Trump has announced a major federal initiative aimed at curbing violent crime in Memphis, Tennessee, unveiling plans to deploy multiple federal agencies and National Guard troops to the city. Speaking from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump signed a presidential memorandum to officially establish the Memphis Safe Task Force, framing the move as part of his broader effort to restore law and order in urban areas across the United States.
“I’m signing a presidential memorandum to establish the Memphis Safe Task Force,” Trump said. “This is very important because of the crime in Memphis and many other cities. We’ll handle it step by step, just like we did in D.C.”
Multi-Agency Federal Operation
The task force will be a coordinated operation involving several federal agencies, including the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Homeland Security Investigations, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Trump explained that the initiative will closely mirror the Washington, D.C. crackdown earlier this year, which he described as “extraordinarily successful.”
“The task force will be a replica of our efforts in D.C.,” Trump said. “It’s going to take the same approach, and you’ll see strong results.”
In addition to federal agents, National Guard troops will also be deployed to support Memphis law enforcement. Their presence, Trump stated, will send a clear message that the federal government is serious about tackling violent crime and restoring order.

On August 11, Trump deployed 800 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., to address rising gang violence and illegal firearm activity. Those troops came from Ohio, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, and their presence was credited by the administration with lowering crime rates within weeks.
