Hollywood’s Rising Star Faced a Hidden Crisis — and His Daughter Paid the Price

In the early 1980s, Eric Roberts seemed to embody the very definition of a magnetic leading man. With sharp features, intense on-screen presence, and a reputation for delivering emotionally charged performances, he quickly became one of Hollywood’s most compelling new faces. But long before the fame and accolades, he had already set in motion a choice that would shadow him for decades: at just thirty-five, he walked away from his baby daughter, leaving behind a decision he would later confront with painful honesty.

Born in 1956 in Biloxi, Mississippi, Roberts grew up in a family immersed in creativity. Theater, performance, and emotional volatility shaped much of his upbringing. By his twenties, he was already earning admiration on Broadway, and his breakout work in Burn This cemented him as an actor capable of carrying complex, combustible roles. Hollywood followed quickly. Nominations for King of the Gypsies, Star 80, and Runaway Train confirmed he was positioned for a major breakthrough.

But while his professional reputation soared, his personal life unraveled. Fame collided with addiction, creating a dangerous spiral that left relationships unstable and priorities fractured. When his daughter Emma was born on February 10, 1991, Roberts was in no state to navigate fatherhood. His relationship with her mother, Kelly Cunningham, deteriorated under the strain of his drug use. Kelly received full custody, and Roberts did not dispute it. Years later, he admitted in his memoir Runaway Train, “I had abandoned Kelly when Emma was just seven months old. I couldn’t handle the realities of an infant coming into my life, and I couldn’t handle being a parent.”

Complicating the public narrative was the involvement of his sister, Julia Roberts, whose fame amplified every rumor. For years, tabloids insisted the siblings were locked in a dramatic custody feud. Roberts addressed these claims directly, writing, “The question has been begged, forever it seems, whether Julia and I had a giant falling out over custody of Emma.… Julia helped Kelly financially because she could, and because it was for Emma. I deeply appreciated it.”

While Eric spiraled, Emma grew up surrounded by creativity rather than chaos — visiting her aunt on sets, finding joy backstage, and slowly developing her own artistic spark. But the distance from her father left a lasting ache, one neither of them could ignore.

What happened next would redefine both of their lives.
