Zachary Willmore on Breaking Barriers, Facing Backlash, and Finding His Voice

Years after being crowned Missouri’s first male homecoming queen, Zachary Willmore continues to reflect on the lessons and challenges that came with his groundbreaking moment. What began as a local high school event evolved into a national story — one that drew both admiration and anger.
Speaking recently about renewed coverage of his win, Zachary said, “I feel like some of these articles that have come out recently are meant to enrage people.” He pointed out that some headlines emphasize his gender in ways designed to provoke outrage. “‘Homecoming queen in the state of Missouri — who is a man.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is so obviously trying to rage-bait people.’”
Much of the criticism, he explained, stemmed from misconceptions. Some believed he had “taken the spot from a girl,” but the school’s voting system had no gender divisions. “It was based off of popularity at the time and how many votes one specific person could garner regardless of the title,” he clarified. “At this point, I think that some people intentionally misunderstand.”
The scrutiny at times turned hostile. Zachary recalled receiving online harassment and even death threats after videos of the crowning spread across social media. One TikTok clip showing him accepting the crown was temporarily removed due to repeated reports. Despite the negativity, Zachary says the experience made him stronger: “I am definitely so much tougher of a person because of that experience.”
Today, he balances his growing social media presence with his studies at San Diego State University. Through his content, he continues to encourage open conversations about gender expression and acceptance. His courage to stand proudly in his identity has inspired many young people to embrace their authenticity.
Reflecting on the significance of his win, Zachary shared, “It was really special to me because it was a reflection of who I am and what I believe in. I was proud to stand up and be counted, and I think that message is what people remember most.”
While debates around tradition and gender persist, Zachary’s journey remains a testament to resilience and self-expression. His experience has become a symbol of progress — proof that being true to oneself can spark meaningful change, challenge outdated norms, and inspire others to live with confidence and pride.
