Middlebury College Honors the Life and Legacy of Lia Smith

In the days following the confirmation of Lia Smith’s death, tributes poured in from across the Middlebury College community. Messages of remembrance filled campus bulletin boards and social media, as classmates, professors, and teammates shared memories of the young woman they described as intelligent, empathetic, and driven.

President Ian Baucom’s statement reflected the deep sense of loss that permeated the college:

“As we mourn, I want to express my deep appreciation for the efforts of our Student Affairs staff who have been offering such compassionate support to Lia’s family, friends, and students across our community. We will continue to support them in every way possible.”

He went on to highlight Smith’s lasting impact at Middlebury, emphasizing her talent, intellect, and advocacy.

“She was a diver on our Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, a member of our Chess and Japanese clubs, and an articulate advocate for transgender rights. Her academic interests were wide-ranging—she was pursuing a double major in computer science and statistics. Lia was truly a gift to us, and we are deeply grateful that she was, and will always remain, a member of our Middlebury family.”

Lia had joined the college in 2022 and quickly stood out for her excellence both in and out of the pool. As part of the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, she earned wins in the one-meter and three-meter diving events during a 2022 meet, earning praise for her focus and sportsmanship. Teammates described her as someone who quietly lifted others with encouragement and grace.

Her expected graduation date was May 2026, a milestone she will never reach but one her peers and mentors will remember with admiration. The college has announced that a campus vigil will be held in her honor, giving students and staff a space to mourn and celebrate her life.

As the community continues to process this profound loss, support resources remain available to students and faculty affected by the tragedy. Counselors and grief specialists have been made accessible through Middlebury’s health services and local organizations.

Lia Smith’s passing has left an enduring mark on those who knew her — a reminder of the importance of compassion, connection, and mental health awareness.

May Lia Smith rest in peace.
