British social media star ‘Big John’ detained in Australia over visa

British social media personality “Big John” Fisher, known for his viral fast food reviews and signature catchphrase “bosh,” has been detained in Australia after a visa issue halted his planned tour. The popular online figure, who boasts nearly 700,000 followers on Instagram and over half a million on TikTok, arrived in Western Australia on Tuesday for a series of live appearances across the country.

However, Fisher revealed through social media that his events in Perth and Sydney were abruptly cancelled after Australian authorities stopped him over an alleged visa problem. He explained that border officials held him for four hours, questioning the purpose of his trip. While Fisher said his visa was “legit,” officials reportedly believed he was intending to work during his visit, which would not be permitted under his current visa category.

“It’s absolutely gutted me,” Fisher said in a post from the airport, adding that he would soon be deported to London. “Sorry, Perth, sorry, Sydney.” The Australian Border Force declined to provide details, citing privacy rules, but it is understood Fisher entered the country on an incorrect visa type.

The British food reviewer, widely recognised for his upbeat tone and love of Chinese takeaway, has built a massive following by sharing short clips in which he samples various dishes before ending each review with his trademark shout of “bosh.” His enthusiastic personality and relatable charm have turned him into one of the UK’s most beloved online food commentators.

Despite the unexpected setback, Fisher appeared to remain in good spirits, posting photos and messages from a detention hotel while awaiting deportation. He told fans that although he was disappointed, he was still “smiling” and still loved Australia — signing off his message with a heartfelt “bosh.”
