Missing teen found trapped inside chimney after 7-year search

On a calm spring morning in 2008, 18-year-old Joshua Maddux left his family home in Woodland Park, Colorado, for what seemed like a routine walk — and he never returned. Known for his warm smile, adventurous spirit, and artistic creativity, Joshua had always been someone who embraced life fully. Neighbors described him as gentle, thoughtful, and deeply connected to nature. No one imagined that a simple walk could become the start of a mystery that would linger for years.

Joshua lived with his father, Mike Maddux, and his two sisters, Kate and Ruth. The family had already endured tragedy when Joshua’s older brother, Zachary, took his own life two years earlier. Despite the grief, Joshua remained optimistic, offering light and humor even in dark times.

On May 8, 2008, he told his sister he was stepping out for a walk, wearing a light shirt, jeans, and sneakers. That was the last time anyone saw him. When Joshua didn’t return that evening, his father initially thought he’d wandered with friends or explored the nearby trails. But as hours passed, anxiety grew. After five days, Mike filed a missing person report, and a search began — spanning the forests, trails, and paths Joshua loved. Volunteers joined, flyers were posted, and classmates were interviewed. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The search yielded nothing.

Life for the Maddux family became a limbo between hope and heartbreak. Kate often imagined her brother in some distant town, chasing dreams, playing music, or writing stories. “He always wanted to see the world,” she said. “Part of me wanted to believe he just left to start over.” Yet, deep down, they all felt something wasn’t right. Joshua was responsible, family-oriented, and rooted in his community. Disappearing without a word was uncharacteristic of him.

The Shocking Discovery
Seven years later, in August 2015, construction crews began dismantling an old log cabin on Meadowlark Lane, less than a mile from the Maddux home. The cabin had long been abandoned, slowly deteriorating amid the pine trees. As workers removed the chimney, they noticed what appeared to be a human hand. Inside the narrow brick shaft, they found a tightly curled body. The remains were remarkably preserved by the dry mountain air, allowing dental records to confirm the identity: Joshua Maddux.

Mike Maddux received the call no parent should ever get. “I about had a heart attack,” he said. “All those years not knowing… and he was right there.”

The scene was unsettling. Joshua wore only a thin thermal shirt; his pants, socks, and shoes were neatly folded nearby. A heavy wooden breakfast bar blocked the fireplace from the inside. How had he ended up in the chimney if it was blocked?
