In the midst of growing political battles over Medicare and other federal entitlement programs, old footage of leading Democrats from 2010 has resurfaced, revealing strikingly similar positions to those now championed by Republicans and government reform advocates.
During a public hearing with then-President Barack Obama, Sen. Chuck Schumer emphasized the importance of tackling inefficiencies to preserve Medicare’s long-term stability. He stressed that the program could only remain solvent if waste, fraud, and abuse were eliminated, while ensuring that patients continued receiving quality care.
At the same event, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a similar argument, declaring that the government had a responsibility to seniors and the nation to eliminate unnecessary costs in Medicare. She underscored that such cuts were essential to keeping benefits and premiums intact.
Yet more than a decade later, Democrats are attacking President Donald Trump, Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk, and congressional Republicans for making the very same call to address fraud and waste within entitlement programs. Critics have accused Musk and others of targeting Social Security and Medicare directly, sparking a heated political showdown.
