As the U.S. edges closer to a potential government shutdown, President Donald Trump and leading Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, Speaker Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, have claimed that Democrats want to provide free health care to undocumented immigrants.
Speaking outside the White House Tuesday morning, Trump said Democrats “want to be able to take care of people that are coming into our country illegally,” and added that they aim to provide “full health care benefits” to these individuals.
After a meeting with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries to negotiate a potential shutdown resolution, Vice President Vance echoed the claims. He asserted that Democrats’ proposal suggested giving “massive amounts of money, hundreds of millions of dollars, to illegal aliens for their health care while Americans are struggling to pay their health care bills.”
