The recreation allowed participants to experience firsthand how confined the area felt when occupied by the same number of people investigators say lived there.
Almost immediately, volunteers commented on the lack of available space.
Volunteers Describe the Experience
Participants reported that the room became crowded within moments of everyone entering.
“Definitely not any personal space,” one volunteer said while standing inside the recreated room.
Another participant explained that the room initially appeared larger than expected but quickly felt much smaller once everyone was inside.
“When I first walked in, the room seemed much larger than it was. As we continued to stand in the room… it was difficult to move around,” the volunteer said.
As people shifted positions in an effort to create additional room, someone suggested that the group try sitting down instead.
Even that simple adjustment proved challenging because of the limited amount of available floor space.
Crowded Conditions Quickly Became Uncomfortable
The longer volunteers remained inside the room, the more difficult movement became.
Several participants described feeling confined as they tried to avoid bumping into one another.
One volunteer recalled how quickly the atmosphere changed once everyone had settled into the space.
“It got stuffy. It got crowded. We didn’t know what to do with our arms and we were all trying to just really be in the space,” the participant explained.
According to the volunteer, it did not take long before members of the group began asking, “‘Can we come out yet?’”
The recreation illustrated the challenges of placing 16 people inside a room of that size, even for a relatively short period.

“I know that that’s all they know and there’s such a pureness sometimes with kids that they just adapt and just… exist in the environment that they’re in. You know, it breaks my heart truly that someone had to endure this. They spent a lifetime in there.”

Authorities have since removed the 16 children from the residence.
They are now in the care of the state while the investigation continues.

Family psychologist Dr. David Lowenstein spoke about the difficulties the children may face after leaving the home.

“They’re going to find out that wasn’t the norm,” Lowenstein said.

“Part of why these kids didn’t say anything is they thought all the houses had 16 kids in them,” he explained.
