Shala Holm and her daughter were enjoying a peaceful afternoon on the water while staying at Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort when they encountered a giant river resident unlike anything they had expected to see.

The remarkable meeting produced a series of photographs that quickly attracted widespread attention, with many viewers amazed by the turtle’s impressive size, powerful claws, and prehistoric appearance.

Although snapping turtles are native to the region, seeing one of this scale at such close range is an experience few people ever have.

A Strange Sound Along the Riverbank

The outing began quietly as Holm and her daughter paddled through a calm stretch of the Mississippi River while fishing for crappies.

The peaceful atmosphere changed when Holm’s daughter noticed an unusual rustling sound coming from the nearby water.

Curious about the source of the noise, Holm turned toward the riverbank.

Moments later, a large turtle slowly emerged from beneath the surface, revealing its head before swimming directly toward their tandem kayak.

Its destination quickly became obvious. Attached to the side of the kayak was a wire basket containing the fish they had caught earlier in the day.

On rare occasions, exceptionally large individuals may reach weights of around 65 pounds.

 

Experts Estimate the Turtle’s Age

After photographing the turtle, Holm shared the images with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for further evaluation.

Wildlife specialists examined the photographs and concluded that the turtle’s size and the condition of its shell indicated it was a mature animal.

Based on those characteristics, experts estimated the turtle was at least 15 years old and could potentially be as old as 30.

Its weathered shell and substantial size reflected many years of survival in the Mississippi River.

The remarkable encounter might have remained a personal memory had the photographs not been shared publicly.
