Nolan Wells Family Shares New Questions About Teen’s Final Hours as Investigation Continues
Fresh Interviews Bring New Attention to the Search for Answers
New interviews with the family of Nolan Wells have brought additional attention to the circumstances surrounding the death of the 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Although his body was recovered after he disappeared during a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, many questions about his final hours remain unanswered.
As the investigation continues, Wells’ relatives have spoken publicly about details they believe deserve closer examination. They have also retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump to conduct an independent review while authorities continue their own investigation.
The latest interviews focus on what happened shortly before Wells vanished, conflicting descriptions of his movements, activity connected to his cellphone, and statements from those who were with him that day.
A Holiday Trip That Ended in Tragedy
Wells traveled to Horn Island with friends during a Fourth of July outing. What began as a day on the water soon became a missing person investigation after he failed to return with the group.
His disappearance prompted an extensive search involving multiple agencies before his body was found two days later. Although investigators have indicated they believe he likely drowned and have stated that foul play is not currently suspected, the official cause of death has not yet been released.
For Wells’ family, the recovery of his body marked the beginning of a difficult search to better understand exactly what occurred during his final hours.
Family Retains Ben Crump
Seeking additional answers, Wells’ parents enlisted attorney Ben Crump to assist with an independent examination of the circumstances surrounding their son’s death.
During a recent television interview, Crump joined Wells’ parents, Elmore and Christine Wonsley, to discuss several issues they believe require further clarification.
The attorney explained that the family remains focused on obtaining records, reviewing witness accounts, and examining all available evidence while awaiting additional investigative findings.
Conflicting Accounts About Wells’ Last Known Plans
One of the central concerns raised by the family involves differing descriptions of Wells’ intentions before he disappeared.
Crump said a young woman who had been talking with Wells told investigators that he intended to return to the boat where his friends were waiting. However, he said Wells’ friends reportedly gave investigators a different account.
“The fact that they said Nolan was talking to a young woman and she said that he said, ‘I’m going back to get on the boat with the boys.’ The boys said that he said he was going to stay with her,” Crump said. “And so that’s an obvious contradiction.”
The family believes understanding which version is accurate could help establish a clearer timeline of Wells’ final movements.
An Argument Over a Cellphone Raises More Questions
Another issue highlighted during the interview involves a video that Crump said was recorded shortly before Wells disappeared.
According to the attorney, the recording captured what appeared to be an argument involving Wells and his cellphone.
“This video, you can hear an argument going on where Nolan is saying, ‘Give me my freaking phone, what are you freaking doing?'” Crump said.
The attorney stated that Wells’ cellphone later went missing, creating another question that the family believes deserves additional attention.
Crump also questioned whether it would make sense for an 18-year-old to voluntarily remain on the island without taking his cellphone.
“I don’t know any teenagers […] who says, ‘I’m going to stay behind, and I’m going to leave my phone.’ I mean, no young person leaves their cell phone.”
His Mother’s Discovery After Receiving the Phone
After Wells’ cellphone was eventually returned to his parents, Christine Wonsley began reviewing its contents herself.
She said one of the first applications she checked was Snapchat, where she noticed what she considered an unusual absence of activity.
Wells maintained two Snapchat accounts, and his mother said she expected to find photos and videos from the holiday outing because sharing moments with friends had been his normal habit.
“I’ve seen Nolan whenever he snaps. Like, when he goes and he’s having fun, like, he does videos. Like, there was absolutely nothing. No saved videos. And even my sister was like, ‘Yeah, that’s That’s suspicious, you know.'”
She explained that no saved photos or videos appeared on the accounts despite the recent trip, something she described as unusual.
Best Friend Responds to Viral Video
As discussion surrounding the case expanded online, Wells’ best friend, Jayvon Williams, also addressed a video circulating on social media.
Some viewers have suggested the recording captures Wells arguing shortly before he disappeared. Williams, however, said he does not believe the voices belong to his friend.
“But in that video, I feel like it’s the voices are too clear. Like from the side, it’s too clear for it to be that far away for it to be Nolan arguing,” Williams said.
Instead, he believes the voices belong to another friend who became involved in a separate confrontation.
“And then also that altercation, it sounds just like my other friend that got into an altercation on the boat. And they were trying to — like as he was in the altercation that was calming him down — they were trying to get him out off the island.”
Williams recalled that adults present attempted to remove that individual from the island because he had become increasingly upset.
“They were trying to get him back to land because he was just losing it,” Williams said. “He was just very hostile. Like, he was just, like, mad. Like they were just trying to like — the parents on that boat were trying to get him out.”
“None of This Adds Up”
Williams also revealed that he has not yet been interviewed by law enforcement despite being one of Wells’ closest friends.
He said he remains willing to cooperate fully with investigators whenever requested.
“Like I said, I have nothing to hide, like that’s my boy, and I want him to find justice,” he said.
He added, “This whole situation… none of this adds up honestly.”
The Timeline Before Wells Disappeared
Authorities previously stated that Wells was last seen near Horn Island around 3 p.m.
Williams had originally planned to travel on the same boat as Wells, but the vessel reached capacity before he could board. Instead, he traveled separately and later reunited with his friend on the island.
Williams placed their final meeting sometime after 4 p.m.
During the outing, Wells reportedly spent time talking with a girl he knew while socializing with others on the beach.
Williams also recalled a personal conversation during which Wells told him that he loved him.
Another friend, Trace Carter, reportedly asked Wells to let him know when he returned safely. Wells promised to check in later that evening.
That message never came.
Authorities were later informed that Wells had remained on Horn Island after others departed.
When he failed to return home, Christine Wonsley contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office around midnight to report him missing.
Large Search Effort Followed
The search expanded the following day after Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a request for assistance at 12:26 p.m.
An urgent marine broadcast was issued while a helicopter joined the operation.
A command post was established at the Lake Mars Boat Launch as multiple agencies participated in the search, including the Coast Guard, National Park Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and state and local authorities.
The volunteer rescue organization United Cajun Navy also assisted as crews searched the surrounding waters and shoreline.
Body Found Near Horn Island
The search concluded on July 6 when a U.S. Park Service ranger discovered a body near the northwestern tip of Horn Island.
Later that day, Christine Wonsley confirmed publicly that the remains were those of her son.
Dental records officially confirmed Wells’ identity the following day.
Afterward, the family retained Ben Crump to begin an independent review while investigators continued gathering evidence.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also requested photographs, videos, and information from anyone who may have witnessed unusual activity on Horn Island during the July 4 outing.
Judge Addresses Public Speculation
As public attention intensified, Judge Ashlee Cole issued a lengthy statement addressing rumors involving her family.
She explained that her son, Warren, had been friends with Wells and fully cooperated with investigators after the tragedy.
Judge Cole also noted that she and Christine Wonsley had known one another since high school and expressed sympathy for Wells’ family.
“I graduated high school with Christine Wells-Wonsley. We are from the same community. I have the utmost respect for her and all of the Wells family. We mourn the loss of Nolan with them. Our prayers have been and will continue to be with them,” Judge Cole wrote.
She stated that neither she nor her husband had been on Horn Island that day and denied any attempt to interfere with the investigation.
Judge Cole also said Warren last saw Wells around 3 p.m. before leaving around 4:30 p.m. because their boat experienced problems with its bilge pump.
She wrote that Wells chose to remain on the island and planned to return later with another group.
Addressing criticism over deleting her Facebook account, Judge Cole said there were no improper motives behind the decision and described social media as a place where misinformation often spreads quickly.
Independent Autopsy and Continuing Investigation
The family’s efforts have also included arranging an independent autopsy after Wells’ body was sent to Washington, D.C.
A separate autopsy had already been completed by Mississippi’s state medical examiner, but official findings, including toxicology results, had not yet been released.
Authorities have continued to state that Wells likely drowned and that foul play is not presently suspected.
Even so, Wells’ family believes unanswered questions remain regarding conflicting witness accounts, the reported dispute involving his cellphone, deleted messages, and the activity discovered on his Snapchat accounts.
As investigators continue reviewing evidence, Wells’ relatives say they remain committed to seeking a complete understanding of what happened during the teenager’s final hours on Horn Island.
